Outwell Village

Outwell Village

Some of you will have seen the layout before, but for those who havn't here goes.

Outwell Village which many will know is an intermediate depot on the Wisbech & Upwell Tramway. The time frame spans some twenty + years and is vaguely post second world war. This does allows us to run both LNER and British Railways stock, both steam and diesel trams.
The layout built as a joint venture by Neil Rushby (of this parish) and myself but now in my charge as been well received at exhibitions, with many people recognising the area it depicts. This does tell us that we have got things about right.

Very evocative! I went through Outwell for the first time in late August; funnily enough I recognised the place from old photos but sadly I didn't have time to stop and look around as I was following a mate to a classic bike show which I wouldn't have found on my own. That whole area has a very special atmosphere (which the layout captures very well!). I will try to get back up there some time next year and have a good look round, got a pretty much open invite to the same mate's (he lives in Wisbech) so if you see a fat bloke on a small Eastern Bloc 2-stroke motorbike looking lost, it's probably me!
Regards,
Simon

Now that's a scenic accessory challenge :)

As for the layout, it looks great. Well done Alan and Neil.

There's a model of an earlier version of my bike available from (I think) Noch in H0 scale but recreating a "lost" look.....yes that would be a challenge! It might be good to add a suitable smoke genny to recreate the "blue haze" as well.........

Yes you would James, but at a fairly early stage of development. What is obvious to look at from photos of the layout is how much Alan has developed it after I moved away from York. He's filled in a lot of the blank spaces with the buildings that should have been there, fitted the much needed backscene, extended and tweaked some of the scenery, and built up a range of LNER stock. It is in my opinion a much better layout now than it was then.

I'm glad to see the new cottage has completely recovered from the impromptu weathering it received at Holmfirth!

Holmfirth was my first proper sight of Outwell, very nice too. Probably chatted too long on Saturday, read the book and even had a go at uncoupling but my specs weren't up to the task. Nice layout, nice people.

Just put back the photos that went missing, or at least I think they are the ones in the original post.

If I knew I would.
No at the moment it is under going a bit of a face lift. Just adding a bit of character and a bit more detail.
Will post some pics after my next visit to the layout, as at the moment it resides in a room some thirty miles away as I have no space at home to work on it.
Watch this space as they say.

Well you know how it is........ time on your hands and a layout just carelessly left lying around.......... ;)

Out1.jpg

Things just kinda start happening and one thing leads to another............. :?

out2.jpg

...bollards, scratchbuilt railings, fencing and gates suddenly start appearing.........

out3.jpg

...and the scenery suddenly starts developing spaces for missing roadways.........

out4.jpg

Must do something about that phone box.............!

Pity the owner knows nothing about it!

Inspite of another project on the go and various distractions that 'just get in the way' another evening has seen more steady progress.........

out3.jpg

With Alan proffering a mock up of the building that was behind the yard office once upn a time (though was demolished in later years) the look of the village scene is changing ........... we figured that it makes a good feature (and hides the point contol switch better than the bush that was there previously)..........

A lot of other small details taken from the prototype are starting to appear too .............see if you can spot them!

What time have you just posted ? 11.48pm ? I suppose it's the virtue of going home sober. (It must be said, a good job you do otherwise Tappa and I would be walking home again and my bladder hasn't got the range anymore to take me from the "National" to my house in one stride! Tappa's ok cos he's younger and more fit!
