What's afoot...

Postby iak » Fri Apr 23, 2010 3:01 pm

It has been far too quiet of late hereabouts.
Save to say a good deal of new stock is pending. The target date for most of it is September when Mostyn heads to Scaleforum so....
A plethora of medfits, some SNCF minerals and yet more 12 ton vans are getting a seeing to; I hope to get some images done soon as some very bizarre things have ended up being utilized in these projects. Essentially, never throw anything away from you odds & sods box ;)

Some very dog-eared SNCF's lived at Mostyn in the Dock Yard together with some other auld oddities :drool
Having the info and images to confirm this tasty morsel well..........
The extended BBB has some of the Dock sidings on and it seemed to good a chance to miss - might catch a few nuggets out mind

Sounds like an interesting find Ian. Moss Bay steelworks at Workington had some fascinating stuff lying around until its recent disappearance from the face of the planet...

Hi Dave,

Some shots of SNCF minerals at Mostyn docks in 1981 can be seen here :-

http://gallery6801.fotopic.net/p52787004.html

As Iain says, there are a whole collection of oddities in the Mostyn Docks internal user fleet that have been recently shown to us.

Cheers,

Richard

The Medfit Madness continues - replacing axleboxes last night!
The auld Ratio kit is another one of those which lend itself to some serious noodling.
Geoff Kent has an extensive section on them in his first "Wagons" book; have a look and see the sort of thing I mean ;)

Hi Iain,

Any reason for using the Ratio kit rather than the Parkside one?
I've built the Parky kit but never looked too closely at the Ratio version.

I've had them years and they need building :D
Actually I think it is the better kit David.
Its easier to work with and lends itself to tweaking better - at least with regards to the unfitted & retro vac-fitted ones.
I've found the Parkside "lumpy" - mind they are auld ones the ones I've built so maybe i need to check out the more recent Parkside production...

A wee update.
Extensive progress means we have a lot of finished stock pending some paint and lettering.
Its amazing what you can do on the patio whilst the Missus does her Monty Titchmarsh :)
Occasional interruptions to do some sensible hubby helping are most agreeable - I am not green fingered in any way :D
Anyhow, onwards towards Bracknell

Last night saw the last capping strips go on a Medfit and some serious Archer riveting/bolt action.
However even I baulked at doing the bolts on the angle iron strengtheners on one of the Medfits - I may be bonkers but I'm naer that crazy
PAINT beckons..............

Arrrcgh!
Severe wagon overload has resulted in assistance from other works in the Beastie corp...
However - on site finishing now seems inevitable.
Beware of grumpie wagon builders if one is going to EXPO  :face: :axe:

Well I was not too grumpie and three new vans made it onto the layout during the weekend.
I aim to try and get some way of illustrating the way I weather things up with the watercolour pencils sorted out soon as I can for those who saw me noodling away.
Save to say those peskie medfits are still being a pain...
A top tip, check your files for size and correctness before you get a chum to print them on the ALPS printer!! DOH!! :face:

SO it has been quiet - well there is a wedding to plan and other things............... :D
A visit or three to that nice Mr Bartlett's piccies emporium has provided a number of very nice oddities to dribble about. Save to say these projects are pencilled in for the pending building season.
As for those "other" projects, well its a case of getting them done afore anything else gets started - honest

THe summer break has been a major interuption this year sooooo...
I have been messing with some of Craig Welsh's etches and they are very recomended - more work tonight will see some medfits with brake leavers.
Yes I did say Medfits and they will be finished; all of them, soon! Piccies to follow on the relevant thread.
The next thing to play with will be some LMS vans with Exactoscale bouncy bits :o
One would be surprised to see what was still lurking in the engineers stock in 1977.
After that? Now that would be telling

A change of tack has been decided on.
BR Brakes and others are now urgently needed so...
Some Bachmanns are for the treatment and "Bradwelling"
Oh and some new Hornby brakes are in the "to fettle" shop as well.
The Bradwell chassis is for these too as well as some other bist frae a well known buffer producer [hinty, hint... ]
Other brake vans will include some dog-eared ex LMS & LNER brakes frae the Chivers, Parkside and Dapol kits.
No half measures - its all very well have lots of freight stock but one needs something still for the erse end :ugeek:
